These first two verses are meant to give one example of how closely life and death are related, and how it is an ongoing process. As the old woman closes her eyes, the confusion about life that she had is transferred to the newborn baby. The second verse describes an old mother dying. When the baby opens its eyes, the confusion of the surrounding world is instant. The first verse is describing the birth of a newborn baby to a new mother. It was meant to take place in a hospital setting. The song is essentially describing the circle of life.
